Endodontics is most commonly known as root canal treatment and is used in order to protect the dental pulp from further injury, disease and infection. Many factors such as deep fillings, cracks, gum disease and decay are believed to be the cause of injury to the pulp.
This is because when the pulp is left exposed to bacteria it will cause an infection and become very painful and swollen. If not treated quickly it will lead to the destruction of the bone that supports the tooth.
Treatment consists of the infected pulp and roots being cleaned and sealed and in most cases this can be successfully carried out in one visit.
